The Newton Citizen won five awards in the Georgia Press Association’s 2019 Better Newspaper Contest. The awards were announced Friday night during the GPA’s 133rd annual convention held at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel.

The Citizen brought home three first-place awards. Senior reporter Larry Stanford won for Best Photo Gallery on a newspaper website and contributing writer Beth Sexton won for Religion Writing. The newspaper also won a first place for its editorial page.

Other awards were presented for Local News Coverage, second place, and Layout and Design, third place.

“I’m proud of our staff and the recognition they received from the GPA,” said Alice Queen, editor of the Newton Citizen, Rockdale Citizen, Clayton News Daily and Henry Herald. “Local news is what we do, so to be honored for our local news coverage and lifestyle coverage means a lot.

“And the recognition for multimedia journalism shows the strides we have made, and continue to make, on the digital side. It’s nice to see our staff’s hard work recognized.”

The Henry Herald and Clayton News were also honored at the convention.

Henry Herald senior reporter Heather Middleton won second place for Best Photo Gallery on a newspaper website and third place for Education Writing. The newspaper also won second place for its editorial page.

Middleton also won second place for Education Writing for the Clayton News and brought home third place for Best Photo Gallery on a newspaper website.
