COVINGTON — Runners braved unseasonably cool temperatures and drizzle Saturday morning to take part in the 18th annual Cheerios Challenge sponsored by the YMCA of Covington.

The Covington Cheerios Challenge started in 2001 in conjunction with the Y’s Healthy Kids Day to promote exercise and healthy living. It has grown from 45 kids running the 1-mile to more than 1,300 adults and children of all ages in 15K, 10K, 5K, 1-mile and Tot Trot races.

The Cheerios Challenge is Covington YMCA’s largest fundraiser. All proceeds from the event go to the Y’s Annual Campaign, which helps families and children participate in YMCA programs who otherwise would not be able to due to financial hardship.

Sponsors of this year’s event included Edward Jones Investments, Omni Machine Works Inc., Beaver Manufacturing, Advantage Fire, Wagner, General Mills, BB&T, Benton’s Welding Supply, United Bank, Sunbelt Builders, K&D Shoes, Piedmont Healthcare, Clairon Metals Corp., Covington Police Who Care, Michelin, Li-Way Transfer and Storage, Ginn Chevrolet Jeep Chrysler Dodge Ram, Newton Federal Bank, Re/Max Agents Realty, Covington Veterinary Clinic, Takeda and Verescence.
