Conyers residents Carmilla Marbaugh, shown here with friend USMC Capt. Lucas Elgie, celebrated her 100th birthday on Jan. 10 at the Conyers VFW Hall with family and friends. Marbaugh, who grew up in Iowa, recalls traveling at age 5 to her family’s farm in a horse-drawn sleigh. She attended and taught in a one-room schoolhouse and in public schools in Iowa and Ohio for over 20 years. She and her late husband, Roland Marbaugh, a retired USMC major, moved to Conyers in 1985. Marbaugh has two adult children and two grandchildren, all living in the Atlanta area. Her paintings, memoir and book of poetry were displayed at the birthday party. (Special Photo)
