CONYERS — Homeowners For Better Government, in collaboration with Rockdale County Sheriff Eric J. Levett and a panel of experts, will host a town hall meeting dealing with short-term vacation rentals at 7 p.m. July 18 at the Philologia Masonic Lodge, 1005 Milstead Ave. NE in Conyers.

Recent disturbances, including shots being fired, at Airbnb and other short-term rental locations in local subdivisions have prompted a call for a ban on the rentals in Rockdale County.

HOFBG is asking all homeowner associations to let their memberships know so all affected homeowners can attend and tell their sides of this issue. In addition, HOFBG asks that HOA board members attend in order to discuss directly with law enforcement and the panel what can be done now to protect the community and what the HOAs can do while waiting for a possible ban on short-term rentals.

“We are not discussing the legitimate traditional bed and breakfasts, but rather the profiteers who are tearing at the fabric of our community,” said HOFBG President Don Meyer. “These homes are used as commercial establishments, but do not carry legitimate commercial insurance coverage. In the event of a major claim to cover adjacent homeowner losses, will the short-term vacation rentals vendors’ coverage be denied, leaving you on the hook? Will your insurance company then accept the claim? If you don’t know, then you need to attend and learn how to protect yourself from a potential staggering financial loss.”

Guests are encouraged to arrive early to meet and talk with the panel before the program starts.
