COVINGTON — “Doom Patrol” is coming to Covington!
The live action production based on the 1963 comic superhero team will be filming all day Monday on the Square. The Square Park will be closed for filming from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., and some parking spaces will close beginning Friday, but all businesses on the Square will remain open.
“Doom Patrol” began filming in Conyers last fall. It is being produced by Berlanti Productions (known for “The Flash,” “Arrow,” “Supergirl” and “Black Lightning”), and is featured on Warner Bros.’ new superhero exclusive streaming service, DC Universe (www.dcuniverse.com).
Production crews began setting up Friday, will begin filming Monday, and taking down the sets Tuesday. Parking spaces to be blocked include five in front of the Historic Courthouse, 10 to 15 spaces along Washington Street, nine spaces beside Bread and Butter on Washington Street, 45 spaces around the Square Park and on Washington Street, eight spaces on Pace Street near Kutter’s, and the lane beside the courthouse.
Road closures Monday will be between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Washington Street between Hendrick and Church streets, and Pace/Church Street between Floyd and Reynolds streets. There will be intermittent traffic control on Clark Street between Church and Monticello, and on Pace/Church Street between Floyd and Reynolds. Delays of one to three minutes can be expected.
In addition to the filming on the Square Park, there may be some filming on the exterior steps of the Historic Courthouse, with possibly fake gunfire near the courthouse on Monday.
“Doom Patrol” is made up of Dr. Niles Caulder (The Chief), Robotman (Cliff Steele), Negative Man, Elasti-Girl, Crazy Jane and Cyborg. Doom Patrol has been compared to Marvel’s “X-Men.”
According to IMDb, “The Doom Patrol’s members each suffered horrible accidents that gave them superhuman abilities — but also left them scarred and disfigured. Traumatized and downtrodden, the team found purpose through The Chief, who brought them together to investigate the weirdest phenomena in existence — and to protect Earth from what they find. Part support group, part Super Hero team, the Doom Patrol is a band of super-powered freaks who fight for a world that wants nothing to do with them … Doom Patrol will find these reluctant heroes in a place they never expected to be, called to action by none other than Cyborg, who comes to them with a mission hard to refuse, but with a warning that is hard to ignore: their lives will never, ever be the same.”
Robotman is voiced by Brendan Fraser and portrayed by Riley Shanahan; Negative Man is voiced by Matt Bomer and portrayed by Matthew Zuk, Elasti-Girl is played by April Bowlby, Crazy Jane is played by Diane Guerrero, Dr. Niles Caulder is played by Timothy Dalton, and Cyborg is played by Joivan Wade.
