LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Thanks for making Family Fun Day a huge success

Marcello Banes

Thousands of Newton County residents gathered at Legion Field to celebrate an idea of #OneNewton on Saturday, April 14.

Representatives from the municipalities of Newton County, Covington, Porterdale, Oxford, Mansfield, Newborn and Social Circle, along with respective public safety officers came together to provide a fun-filled day of free activities and fellowship for Newton County’s Family Fun Day.

This was the first time for this event, and it is safe to say it was a rousing success.

An estimated 4,000 people, young and old from every corner of our great county, came out to enjoy free food, great music, fun activities and fantastic weather. It really was a day to be thankful for. People danced, children chased bubbles, played with cute and furry animals, explored fire trucks and rode a bucket to the sky.

A few lucky people went home with a Fitbit, Keurig or a new television. Attendees enjoyed hot dogs, popcorn and cotton candy. Our Family Fun Day also provided health screenings, voter registration, information about Covington’s butterfly gardens, local colleges, trails and more. Everyone in attendance enjoyed a peaceful day of fun in the sun.

Myself and the members of the Newton County Family Fun Day Planning Committee are extremely grateful for those who made the day not only possible, but a fantastic success. Thank you to all who donated to the event and provided sponsorship. Without you a good idea would never have become a great event.

I would also like to thank all the organizations who came out to inform residents of Newton County of some great opportunities we have to offer. Also, a special thank you must go out to the city of Covington, who allowed us use of Legion Field and displayed what a great event space is available in the heart of Newton County.

A special thank you to everyone who used their Saturday to volunteer and help provide a free day of entertainment to their community. We had around 100 Newton County employees and members of church groups, civic organizations and others eager to provide a good time.

Last, but not least, thank you to all who were excited to come out or just plain curious to see what all the hoopla was about. Not only did you make those of us who have been planning this for months extremely happy but also encouraged us to do it again.

Please allow the memories of Newton County Family Fun Day 2018 to prepare you for an even greater experience in 2019!
