CONYERS - A female suspect in a fatal stabbing at the Motel 6 on Dogwood Drive Monday morning was shot by officers on I-75 South in Turner County Monday afternoon. She is listed in serious but stable condition at Navicent Medical Center in Macon.
According to Capt. Jackie Dunn of the Conyers Police Department, officers were called to a disturbance at the motel. They found a female who had been stabbed multiple times. She was transported to Piedmont Rockdale Hospital and pronounced dead a short time later. She has been identified as Rosalyn Lewis, 47.
Investigators talked to witnesses and received information that the stabbing suspect was Joyce Marie Lewis-Pelzer, 42. They also learned that she had fled and was possibly headed south to Florida. Conyers issued a BOLO to law enforcement agencies along I-75.
According to a Georgia Bureau of Investigations news release, the suspect’s vehicle was spotted on I-75 Monday afternoon.
“At approximately 3:15 p.m., Lewis-Pelzer’s vehicle was spotted traveling south on I-75 in Crisp County near mile post 95 by a Georgia State trooper. The GSP trooper, along with two Crisp County deputies, attempted to initiate a stop of the vehicle. The vehicle accelerated and continued to travel southbound. A Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) was initiated by the GSP trooper. Lewis-Pelzer was able to recover from the skid and continued to flee south. Near mile post 84 in Turner County, the GSP trooper again utilized the PIT maneuver and was able to successfully stop the vehicle.
“Two Crisp County deputies approached the vehicle and at least one shot was fired at the deputies from inside Lewis-Pelzer’s vehicle. The two deputies returned fire, striking her. One of the deputies on scene was medically trained and rendered aid until EMS arrived.”
According to the GBI, the suspect was transported by ambulance to the hospital in Macon and is listed in serious but stable condition. Neither of the officers was injured. The GBI is conducting an officer involved shooting investigation at the request of the Turner County Sheriff’s Office.
Conyers is continuing to investigate the stabbing to determine a motive for the murder.
