CONYERS — Two people are dead and two wounded in what the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office is calling two unrelated shootings that occurred Monday night. Both shootings have been deemed domestic situations.
The first shooting happened at a home on Salem Church Road. According to Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Michael Meyers, two males living in the house were shot, one fatally. The second victim was air-lifted to an Atlanta hospital for treatment. Investigators believe the dead man may have shot the other man, then turned the gun on himself. Detectives are interviewing a third male, who also apparently lived in the house, and waiting to talk to the victim.
The second shooting occurred at a home on Nantucket Way. An elderly woman, identified as Beverly Hayes, 66, was killed, and her husband, identified as Ozzie Hayes, 78, was wounded and was air-lifted to an Atlanta hospital for treatment. Investigators are waiting to interview the husband, but evidence is pointing toward the husband shooting his wife, then turning the gun on himself, authorities said.
Sheriff Eric Levett called both events tragedies, but advised the public that there is no need for people to fear for their safety from an unknown gunman.
“Both of these events are domestic in nature,” Levett said. “These are both shootings where the shooters and victims knew each other.”
