The Newton Poll is a weekly compilation of reader comments on subjects of local interest. The Newton Citizen publishes as many comments as space allows. Comments, which may be edited for space or content, are published anonymously on Sunday. To submit a comment, call 770-483-7108, ext. 403, email: email@example.com or complete the online form.
“What prompted me to write my concerns was the first citizen’s comment that your paper printed in your 5/9-10 editorial. This comment told how the Newton County Recreation Department treats the taxpayers of Newton County. I have read many of these comments over the years, but no corrective action ever seems to be forthcoming. I don’t think people care until it happens to them. My family for over 30 years has been part of a ‘soft rock and roll band’ who always gives freely of their time to play for charitable events. Around four Saturdays ago we took our trailers, stage and instruments to the Turner Lake Park to play for a senior citizen’s event featuring motorcycle riders, etc. When we got to the park, it was already overrun with what seems to be rich people. They told us they had leased the park for their ball games, and we could not park our trailers in the parking lots. When we asked where we could park, they told us that was not their problem, to call the county. The only place we found where we could park was on the grass jammed up against the back of the Senior Citizen’s building. Some of the motorcycle riders told us they had to get there the night before and use a ‘do not cross’ tape to mark off the curved driveway in front of the office building where they would have a place to park. The event seemed to be a disaster and it is a shame that the county citizens are treated so shabbily. In closing, I want to thank the Newton Citizen for printing the comments that expose the Newton County government.”
“Congratulations to the ‘Blinded-Sided’ person who serves on two nonprofit groups that contributed to the Miracle League. I serve on four nonprofit groups including the Friends of the Newton County Miracle League. For your information, no one has misinformed anyone about the people who would be using this facility. Mrs. Richardson always informed everyone that we would draw participants from a 60-mile radius…. come out, get involved and volunteer! … and by the way if you haven’t read the papers, or watched the news, our commissioners have a lot more problems to worry about than some out-of-town family with special needs children playing on one of our fields! But then again, you have been complaining for years about Turner Lake and got nowhere, so now you feel the need to start your campaign of complaining on the one positive thing this town has had in a while!”
“I just happened to look at Porterdale Mayor Arline Chapman’s Facebook page, where she has posted an article about County Attorney William Thomas Craig. Below this article, people have posted numerous comments defaming and defiling Mr. Craig …. However, I just wondered if anyone has ever looked into the taxpayer money being paid to Porterdale’s City Attorney Tim Chambers since he has been employed. Or, at least since City Manager Bob Thomson has been on the payroll … ? Check it out!”
“I have no problem with Ms. Black having her say. To the commenter last weekend, I only say at least she puts her face and name with her comments regardless of what she may have done in the past. You don’t have the guts to do either. Go, Ms. Black. You live in America and are allowed to comment on both polls. I despise these free speech haters. The answer to free speech is more free speech.”
“Why does the Citizen only publish this poll forum only once per week, with around 10 comments? Surely there are five times that many comments coming in, worthy of being published at least twice per week? Just a thought!”
Editor’s note: The Citizen Poll has always been a weekly feature and we appreciate your enthusiasm for it. Unfortunately, some of the comments don’t make it in print due to space in limitations the paper, and others are cut if they don’t meet our guidelines.
“On a regular basis there are comments on county spending, especially for legal expenses. But I have yet to see justification for the spending. Is the county so poorly managed that we as a county are sued more than other counties, or is it a simple matter of a lack of oversight? As the new budget is being written, the county commissioners need to start thinking more like the citizens they serve. The county needs to look at pay raises for the rest of the employees as well as bringing public safety up to par with other jurisdictions. The patrol vehicles I see on the road in Newton County do not have cameras installed. When I see the deputies out of their vehicles there are no body cameras. Possibly if the deputies had cameras the legal expenses would not be so high. The money for the cameras could come from a couple of areas. First the sheriff’s office should start issuing citations for excessive false alarms. Second, the sheriff’s office should start charging funeral homes for escorts … the county is not reimbursed for fuel or man hours.”
“For goodness sake people, the lady has the right to comment on anything she wants, particularly if it’s public knowledge. A college that is state-funded is public information and subject to scrutiny of taxpayers. Get the chip off your shoulder and get over it, and whoever is worried about Large Man or Large Girl, get over that too. This is America, for Pete’s sake, and people have the right to comment on what they want and post on more than one Facebook post and page. What a whiner you are; leave the lady alone. I think she is hysterical. Maybe she is actually doing a large girl a favor and Large Girl will get less large and improve her health. You’re the one hiding behind some anonymous poll, not her. She puts her stuff out there with her face, her picture and her name. And by the way, I support your right to be anonymous and to make comments, but I don’t support limiting free speech of any kind. And I don’t support wimps and whiners; grow up.”
“I think you have to admit and it is pretty common knowledge that the campus caf
