CONYERS — If you’re concerned about the safety of women in your family, the safety of your animals, and/or the safety of your property, then there is a meeting in Rockdale County Thursday night that will address one of those three issues.

From 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening, the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office is holding its first women’s self-defense class at the Sheriff’s Office, the Rockdale Coalition of Homeowners and Civic Association is meeting at the J.P. Carr Community Center with Animal Control as one of the featured county departments, and Homeowners For Better Government will hold a meeting to discuss issues surrounding short-term vacation rentals at the Philologia Masonic Lodge.

Following is more information on each meeting:

♦ Women’s Self-Defense Class

In keeping with Sheriff Eric J. Levett’s vision of the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) serving as guardians of the community and to build a safe and strong community partnership with citizens, the RCSO will host its first ever women’s self-defense class for women ages 13 and older on Thursday, July 18, from 6-8 p.m.

The class will be held in the Sheriff’s Office Training Room and Multi-Media Room on the second floor of the Jail Administration Building at 911 Chambers Drive NW in Conyers.

The class will be led by Lieutenant Jake Coggins, RCSO Training Officer, and Niki Weathersby, RCSO Defensive Tactics Instructor.

During the women’s self-defense class, participants will learn how to prevent attacks through different levels of awareness skills, how to understand the mental conditions of varies offenders, how to develop a combat mind set and build the confidence needed to protect themselves, how to use their environment as a defense, and how to target the major areas of the body. Loose workout clothing is preferred and no prior experience is necessary.

The women’s self-defense class space and limited to 30 participants. To sign up, call Lt. Jake Coggins at 770-278-8059 or Dr. Karen Anderson at 770-278-8109.

The Rockdale County Board of Commissioners is holding the third meeting of 2019 for the Rockdale Coalition of Homeowners and Civic Associations on Thursday, July 18, 6 p.m. at J.P. Carr Community Room, 981 Taylor St., Conyers.

At this meeting, Rockdale County is bringing the expertise of several departments together in a setting to discuss updates, new initiatives and information with leaders of local homeowner associations, civic groups and interested citizens. Departments scheduled for this meeting are Animal Control and the Clerk of Court’s Office.

For more information or to RSVP for the meeting, please contact Jeannettia Owens at 770-278-7058 or

♦ Homeowners for Better Government

Homeowners For Better Government, in collaboration with Rockdale County Sheriff Eric J. Levett and a panel of experts (two attorneys and a real estate agent), will host a town hall meeting dealing with short-term vacation rentals at 7 p.m. on July 18 at the Philologia Masonic Lodge, 1005 Milstead Ave. NE in Conyers (flag pole in front).

Recent disturbances, including shots being fired at Airbnb and other STVR locations in local subdivisions have prompted a call for an all-out ban on STVRs in Rockdale County.

HOFBG is asking all Homeowner Associations to let their membership know so all affected homeowners can attend and tell their sides of this issue. In addition, HOFBG asks that HOA board members attend in order to discuss directly with law enforcement and the panel what can be done now to protect the community and what the HOAs can do while waiting for a possible ban on STVRs.

Guests are encouraged to arrive early to meet and talk with the panel before the program starts.
