CONYERS -- No criminal charges will be filed against a man who fatally shot a would-be robber over the weekend in the parking lot of a local grocery store.

The intended robbery victim was carrying a gun in his holster and shot one of the two robbers during a struggle that occurred about 8 p.m. Saturday outside the Ingles grocery store, located at 2455 Salem Road.

The Rockdale County Sheriff's Office responded to the shooting after being flagged down by a group of people yelling that a person had been shot in the parking lot, according to RCSO reports released Monday.

RCSO spokeswoman Sgt. Jodi Shupe told the Citizen on Monday that no charges will be filed against the intended robbery victim who fatally shot his assailant. She said the 22-year-old man had a gun permit for the weapon used in the shooting.

"He was checked out at the hospital and released right after," Shupe said.

The victim was treated at Rockdale Medical Center for injuries from the attack.

The shooting stemmed from an armed robbery attempt where the Conyers man was attacked at knife point by two men. There was struggle between the victim and the assailants that resulted in the death of one of the suspects involved.

The deceased man, identified as 30-year-old Yuhanna Abdulah Williams of Covington, was shot in the head and died at the scene.

The other robber fled on foot and remained at large as of presstime Monday, Shupe said.

The second suspect is described as a black man, about 6 feet, 4 inches tall, with a slim build. He was wearing a white hoodie.
