The Citizen Poll is a weekly compilation of reader comments on subjects of local interest. This week’s Rockdale Citizen Poll asked the following question: “Rockdale County is about to begin its budget process. What do you think should be budget priorities?” The Citizen publishes as many comments as space allows. Comments, which may be edited for space or content, are published anonymously on Saturday. “Regarding budget priorities, the recent ‘gang’ activity around the Eastview-Milstead area needs to be addressed. The city/county can do all the cosmetic work they want, but if this turns into DeKalb County it will make little difference. We have an influx of trash from the DeKalb area now that is getting more obvious. Conyers used to be a nice town, but lately it is getting filled with ghetto and low life …”
“1) Cutting the Board of Commissioners chairman’s staff size and budget allotment by 75 percent
2) Reducing the Rockdale Water Resources fleet of vehicles by 25 percent
3) Remove funding for all nonessential staff positions
4) Road repair and intersection improvements”
“I think Oden should get a clothing and restaurant/entertainment allowance that will allow him to dress and dine in the style to which he aspires. I mean, with that new impressive SUV, he needs new impressive clothes and money to go and and be seen! Also, get him a new pinky ring, with a nice big diamond. With all that work he’s done, bringing industry here from those China trips and whatnot, he deserves it, right? Look how GRRREAT Rockdale has gotten in these seven years he’s been in office. Why we’re just swimming in pawn shops and gas stations and low-rent housing — that’s progress!”
“Budget suggestions, huh? Why not start with their business with the Rockdale Citizen. No use to pay money to the ‘official organ’ that censors input from the citizens. Next, county transportation: Ford Taruses for managers, Yugos for all others. No Expeditions, next they’ll want a limo with a chauffeur and coachman. Remove 11 x 18 portraits of big wigs and replace with pictures of county employees who actually work. Alot the remainder of the money to fixing the thousands of potholes on Rockdale’s many roads. They’re obviously getting kickbacks from local wheel alignment shops.”
