The Citizen Poll is returning to its roots. Starting next week, contributors to the Rockdale Citizen Poll and Newton Citizen Poll will be asked to respond to a different question each week on an issue of local interest. On occasion the Poll will be an “open line,” allowing readers to comment on what’s on their minds. This is the format that the Citizen Poll followed when it first began publication in the Rockdale Citizen more than 20 years ago. We hope that this return to the original format will encourage our readers to share input that will contribute to a thought-provoking community conversation.

The question for each Citizen Poll will be published a week in advance in print, on our websites and on our Facebook pages. Contributors may respond by phone, email, on our websites or in writing.

The question for Rockdale Citizen Poll contributors next week is: “What do you think about the littering problem in Rockdale County?” Respond at 770-483-7108, ext. 402; email at poll@rockdalecitizen.com, online at www.rockdalecitizen.com; or in writing at: Rockdale Citizen Poll, 969 S. Main St., Conyers, GA 30012.

Responses to this question will be published online and in our Saturday, June 20, print editions.

The Citizen Poll is a weekly compilation of reader comments on subjects of local interest. The Citizen publishes as many comments as space allows. Comments, which may be edited for space or content, are published anonymously on Sunday. To submit a comment, call 770-483-7108, ext. 402, email poll@rockdalecitizen.com or complete the online form.

“Dear Principal, thank you for the gifts and goodies you provided for Teacher Appreciation Week. May I please tell you what I would like to have next year? First, I need your support regarding discipline for my students. This means truly dealing with those students who repeatedly thwart my attempts to provide the best possible education for all of my students. Involve parents and show them that you are not going to allow their child to take away the opportunities for other children. Listen to my side of the story and don’t cave in to parents’ demands and threats. Second, get to know the students in our school. Our children need to know that they are valued and that you know who they are. Third, treats are nice, but I really need to know that there will be paper and toner for copies, toilet paper and paper towels in the restrooms, and other supplies that help make my lessons engaging and relevant. I realize that yours is a difficult job, and I know that sometimes county-level administrators make it even more so, but please understand that I will always do what I feel is best for my students, with or without your help.”

“Regarding the vigil for the slain store owner and clerk: Look at the faces; people from all walks, colors, and nationalities… this is what Rockdale is all about, the joining of many to support family and friends in the good times as well as the tragic.”

“Yes, bullies are not liked so they have to push themselves on others then say they have the ‘right’ to do it. Fine. You have the right to call people fat, tattoo or whatever, but we don’t know who you’re talking about and it is pushy and rude to subject the rest of us to your tiny world. Congrats. You’re the loudest one in the room. Enjoy your rights.”

“Obama: If you like your insurance you can keep it, insurance premiums will go down. ISIS is J.V., Yemen is one of my successes, Al Qaeda is on the run. Lie lie lie. Obama and Obamacare are a fraud on the American middle class with higher deductibles, inferior health care, trillions in new deficits. But great for illegals!”

“I have a question for the people who are posting on here and complaining about the South: Why do you live here? If liberal cities and states are so very wonderful, why did you move here instead of there? Seriously, if religion and conservative values are so horrible to your sensibilities, if you can’t stand that some people are against illegal immigration or having children outside of wedlock, or you get ‘offended’ by off-color politically incorrect humor, just move to a liberal ‘blue’ state.”

“CPD and RCPS need body cams ASAP. Did everyone see the Texas pool party incident? We need these cops to have evidence because videos turned in to news stations are cut before they get them and they do not show the whole story.”

“I just saw the article announcing Freeman’s new job at Athens. I am very proud of him and sad to see him go. I really hope RCSO and CPD are trying to get more rising stars to attend the FBI Academy that Freeman went to. The procedures and leadership he brought back from that have really helped us here. Please send more officers.”

“If you work at Georgia Perimeter College, don’t use their anonymous tip line to complain. Being anonymous is a protection of free speech and the Newton and Rockdale Citizen understand that, but if you complain at GPC on their anonymous ethics alert line they will send human resources people all around the campuses to try to find out who you are. It’s really sort of hysterical. They claim to protect confidentiality when reporting tips or complaints yet they send their spies from human resources out on witch hunts. What a disaster this place is. … ”

“If I thought I was really a giraffe, and went around acting like one, eating like one and wanting to mate with other giraffes, you would say I had psychological problems. But people are convinced that what Bruce Jenner is doing is OK. It’s not OK. He needs help, not people ‘celebrating him being himself.’ Have we gotten that stupid as a country?”

“I just want to know where have all of the teachers gone from Conyers Middle School. Who is running the show over there?”
