Without a doubt the biggest item on the May 22 primary ballot for Newton County voters is a request by the Board of Education for voters to approve a $60 million extension of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales tax (ESPLOST) for education and an additional $60 million in general obligation bonds.


Newton County commissioners on Thursday took the first step on a lengthy list of needed upgrades to the county’s drinking water system. Commissioners voted unanimously, with District 4 Commissioner J.C. Henderson absent, to seek $23.4 million in funding for a wide array of projects designed to repair or replace aging or inadequate infrastructure and increase water treatment capacity.


With needs that include replacing aging infrastructure, paying off debt, and building a new wastewater treatment plant, Rockdale Water Resources (RWR) is proposing increasing water usage rates by 6 percent a year for the next five years.
